Creating an effective Photography Brief
A photography brief is the key to a successful collaboration between clients & photographers. For me, it serves as a roadmap, so that I’m on the same page & that the final photographs meet my client's expectations.
Here’s a few tips on how to create a brief with clear communication to help achieve outstanding results………..
Project Details & Logistics
This is the specifics of the shoot, including the location, date & time of the shoot if known. Any potential contingency plans due to weather. Contact details with mobile numbers for those coming to the shoot.
Audience & Intended Use
What message or story are you trying to convey through the photographs? Outline your overall goals for the shoot. Is it for a new website, to promote an event, product photography, rebranding for your company, supporting images for a tender/ project or printing in magazines or brochures. Understanding the context in which the photos will be displayed helps the photographer capture images that align with your brand's aesthetics & appeal to your intended audience.
Visual Style & Mood
Describe the visual style you have in mind. Use examples to convey the mood & atmosphere of the end photographs. Are you aiming for a candid /natural feel, or is a clean & polished look? Or a mix! Referencing existing photographs, colour palettes & compositions help a lot!
Shoot List & Subjects
Outline the essential shots/ subjects that must be captured during the shoot. If you're working on a product photography project, specify the angles, details & features that need to be highlighted. For event photography, mention key moments, individuals, or activities that are of utmost importance.
Technical Requirements
Image resolution, file formats, & any post-processing requirements are handy to know before the shoot. If you have specific preferences for lighting, composition, or camera angles, or not angles! Also whether certain images need to be horizontal or vertical or whether they will be squared.
Timeline
Clearly state your deadline or a timeline for the finished outcomes Establishing an expected time for receiving the initial proofs and the final edited images.
Budget
Make sure you have confirmed the total price, with no ongoing fees.
Copyright & Publishing
Address copyright & usage rights in your photography brief. Outline how your company will have the right to use the images & if the photographer can also use the images for their portfolio or promotional purposes.
